Observation - this swine flu thing is being blown all out of proportion.
Why? My bet - obfuscation, get everyone paying attention and panicked on this so they are not paying attention to what is going on in DC. Make Obama look like he handled a "crisis", give me a break.
How long before they blame the whole thing on Bush?

It's definitely a concern - as any highly contagious flu strain is - though with few worldwide cases reported, I agree that caution is better employed than fear.

If the political & media spin-doctors can blame this sucker on former-president Bush, I'll be almost as impressed as I am disgusted.

Of course, flu is a problem every year. And my kids would laugh at my lack of panic, cause I'm the first to stock up for Y2K, bird flu, terrorist threat, end of the world as we know it stuff. And I have read a couple very frightening books from THE flu epidemic, but since those days health care – anti-virals, supportive care - is much much better. I do believe that at some point another nasty killer pandemic will work its way through the world, probably faster than ever before - world being as small as it is - but so far this appears to be a lot more hype and not enough clear-headedness.
I hate to see something most likely no worse than normal yearly flu, get blown up into "look how the O saved the world" - and I am afraid that is exactly where we are going with this.

From what I understand they're afraid of it mutating... if that happens we're screwed. So, some precautions from the government might be nice.... like testing folks flying in from Mexico? But no, it's not worth it.

I don't want it to be an O-story, either... ;-)

That is always the case. Any virus can, and often does mutate - often it is the mutation that causes it to eventually die out. But mutations can also make any flu more virulent. That's just the reality. So of course pay attention to standard hygiene, have some food in the house in case of quarantine, have over the counter type meds for handling symptoms, we even have a box or two of masks and rubber gloves in the house - if you are in a position to have tamiflu or relenza on hand great, most of us are not. But for goodness sakes with the panic, and the attempt to stir panic. That helps no one and the more often they do it, the more likely people will ignore the next situation - and that may well be the one that gets us. Oh and have duct tape, ya never know and everyone should have some duct tape :)
